On Tuesday, Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, took to the airwaves on his radio program, Family Talk, to discuss the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. After spending the better part of half the show reading the script from a talk he gave in the 1980s around the decline of the family, Dobson moved the conversation into the state of our nation today, linking the tragedy to gay marriage and abortion among other things:
I am saying that something has gone wrong in America. We have turned our back on God. Millions of people have decided either God doesn’t exist or he’s irrelevant to me. And we have killed 54 million babies. And the institution of marriage is right on the verge of a complete redefinition. Believe me that is going to have consequences, too. …Somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now but I’m going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the Scripture and on God Almighty and I think he has allowed judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what is going on. We’re seeing things happen that didn’t happen just a few years ago and there is a reason for it: something has gone wrong in this country.
