When we pay attention, there’s a fire at the heart of our shared life in America. The question Baltimore is forcing us to consider is whether we will be consumed by these flames or saved from them?
Can we see by the dawn’s early light? Can we—the forces of love and justice—by the dawn’s early light, unify around a comprehensive strategy to get people talking, seeking the common truth of reality, and repairing the breach of trust.
That, in the end, might be the most frightening revelation of all for us: that God’s grace is real in the radical love ethic of Afro-American Christianity—and that, even more—our future depends on turning toward the radical grace of their God.
