Beck Lister is an associate professor of music at a small liberal arts college in south central Pennsylvania. The title for her blog, “The B-Flat Christian,” is a musical reference. Flats are notes on the scale in Western music, but “B-flat” can also be used as an adjective, meaning something that is “ordinary,” “common,” or “normal.” Beck feels strongly that it is normal,
everyday Christians who must join together with courage and compassion to change themselves and the world. After all, Jesus took ordinary objects—water, bread, wine, salt, and light—and transformed them in ways only He could, into objects of holiness. She hopes to embrace being a B-Flat Christian, to celebrate it, and to uncover the hidden and utterly common-place transformations we see every day in this mysterious journey we call life. What makes more sense for us as Christians is to pause and consider why our government refuses to consider looking at altering even the tiniest bit of gun legislation, and yet, seems surprised and grief-stricken as these horrors continue happening.
